Update: Eastbound Portage Avenue has been reopened. There are no delays in the area.

A hit-and-run collision on May 15 around 11:25 p.m. resulted in serious injuries for a female pedestrian.

The victim, who is in her 30's, was found suffering following a collision with a vehicle. It is believed that the pedestrian was hit after stepping onto the road by the vehicle heading eastbound.

She was transported to the hospital in critical condition. At this time, she remains in stable condition, upgraded from her initial condition of critical.

This morning, on May 16, at 1:10 a.m., the adult male suspect turned himself in to a Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) general patrol unit in the area of Garry Street and St. Mary Avenue. He was placed under arrest.

The vehicle suspected to have been involved in the accident was found in the area of Fairfield Park.

At this time, the investigation continues under the WPS Traffic Division, with WPS requesting that anyone with information or who may have been a possible witness to the crash come forward and assist investigators. A major thoroughfare is closed this morning while police investigate a serious motor vehicle collision.

Police have shut down eastbound Portage Avenue just before the Viscount Gort Hotel. Traffic is being rerouted over the St. James Bridge.

Several police markers can be seen in the middle of the roadway.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and to find an alternate route.

Portage Avenue is expected to reopen at around 7 a.m..
