Six people were taken to hospital Saturday evening after a Winnipeg Police Service car collided with a minivan at a Winnipeg intersection.

Witnesses say the collision occurred at the intersection of Aberdeen Avenue and Salter Street just after 7:00 p.m.

The witnesses say that police were in pursuit of a male on a bicycle when the cruiser proceeded into the intersection and struck the van which was travelling along Salter. The force of the collision pushed the van on to its side and sent it skidding several feet. The front of the police cruiser was severely damaged.

Home security cameras in the area caught the collision on tape.

Constable Rob Carver of the WPS says the six people taken to hospital include the two officers in the cruiser. Police were not able to comment on the nature of the collision, and if they were in pursuit of somebody, at this time.

It's not clear at this time whether or not the police car's emergency lights and sirens were activated.

The intersection was shut down until 3:15 a.m. Sunday while investigators were on scene.

The WFPS says all people taken to hospital were in stable condition at the time.
