A man is in custody after damaging police property while attempting to evade Winnipeg police officers.

Late last night authorities noticed a stolen vehicle parked by a residence with a man sitting in the driver's seat.

Officers noticed the SUV being driven was reported stolen this weekend from the Burrows Central neighbourhood.

Officers attempted a traffic stop but the driver of the stolen SUV tried to flee, accelerating into the officer's police cruiser, damaging both vehicles.

The driver was then taken into custody. Authorities searched the stolen SUV and found and seized a sword.

It was later discovered that the man has a warrant out for his arrest by the Brandon Police.

The 29-year-old man from Winnipeg was charged with two counts of assault a peace officer with a weapon, driving while suspended or disqualified, and three other related charges.
