Two police officers are safe after being dragged by a vehicle following an attempted traffic stop in the William Avenue and Harriet Street area.

Winnipeg Police Service officers from the Guns & Gangs Unit noticed a man who is known to police yesterday afternoon enter and drive away in an SUV while his license was suspended.

Police officers pulled the vehicle over in the William Avenue and Harriet Street area. The driver, passenger, and two officers were speaking when the driver suddenly reversed the vehicle, dragging the two officers in the process.

The passenger of the vehicle grabbed onto the second officer's arm, pulling him with the vehicle as they hit a nearby vehicle. The SUV then quickly accelerated forward, almost striking the first officer in the process.

The second officer, who was being dragged by the passenger, jumped into the moving SUV and was able to convince the driver to pull the vehicle over.

A male driver and female passengers were apprehended by police nearby William Avenue and Isabel Street. While searching the vehicle, officers found a firearm and ammunition.

The 30-year-old man is being charged with seven separate charges including Cause Bodily Harm by Criminal Negligence and Drive suspended/while disqualified.

The passenger, a 23-year-old woman from Ontario, was charged with Assault a Peace Officer.

One of the officers sustained minor injuries from the incident.
