A fire early Wednesday morning in East Kildonan has claimed the lives of a few family pets.

Shortly after 8 a.m. yesterday, fire crews responded to a single-family bungalow on Harold Piercy Place.

Smoke could be seen coming from the home when crews arrived at the scene.

They were able to enter the house and battle the fire from inside, declaring it under control a short time later.

No people were in the house went the fire broke out. One dog was able to make it out safely. A second dog and two pet birds were found deceased.

Fire officials say the fire started in the kitchen and is believed to be accidental.
