Police are returning their focus back to the small northern Manitoba community of Gillam, after a tip about two teens wanted for murder in B.C. temporarily drew their attention to another small town 90 kilometres away.

Suspects Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, and Kam McLeod, 19, are charged with the murder of Vancouver professor Leonard Dyck. They are also wanted in connection with the murders of tourists Lucas Fowler and Chynna Deese, who were found dead along a remote B.C. highway on July 15.

Before their burned-out vehicle was spotted in Gillam, the duo was seen about 170 kilometres west of Gillam, in the community of Split Lake.

A local band councillor says the suspects were stopped at a checkpoint by band constables. However, the two men had not yet been named as wanted by police. It was also reported that the pair had maps and camping gear with them when stopped by the constables.

The RCMP says that some members will be staying behind in York Landing, but the Emergency Response Team and others are returning to Gillam.

A Royal Canadian Air Force plane equipped with high-tech thermal detection gear is also a part of the massive hunt.

Police are also using drones and tracking dogs and conducting door-to-door checks of every home and abandoned building in the areas of Gillam, Split Lake, and York Landing.
