A North End library will be shut down for the next year starting tonight as it undergoes renovations.

Starting Friday, August 25 at 5:00 p.m., St. John's Library will be closing down for renovations.

Plans include a redesign of all areas on the main floor, plus renovations to the computer, study, and leisure areas. In addition, an extension will be added to the south side of the building, featuring a bright and open reading area. The lower level will be completely redone as well.

The library will remain closed for a year, expected to reopen in the fall of 2018.

St. John's Library was built in 1915 and these renovations "Will ensure the building meets the needs of today's users and future generations," the City of Winnipeg said in a statement.

During the closure, library users will be sent to West Kildonan Library, located at 365 Jefferson Avenue. Books can be returned to any Winnipeg Public Library branch.
