Firefighters attending a building for a medical call discovered smoke and were quickly able to jump into action early Sunday morning.

The City of Winnipeg says in a release that at 2:57 a.m. the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a medical incident in a high-rise apartment in the 0-100 block of Hargrave Street.

Responding crews noticed smoke in the building and notified the 9-1-1 Communications Centre, which dispatched additional crews. Firefighters declared a working fire at the scene.

Some residents were temporarily evacuated. Firefighters attacked the fire from inside the building, declaring it under control at 3:55 a.m.

Residents in the affected area were not able to return to their suites. All other residents were able to return to their suites when it was deemed safe.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
