The City of Winnipeg is doing it's part in helping newcomers to the area feel welcome and safe.

The City of Winnipeg's Citizen Equity Committee along with the Immigration Partnership Winnipeg is putting on a Newcomer Family Fair on Saturday, July 8 at Freight House.

"We're bringing together newcomers that are here in Winnipeg to learn about the different services we have," said Councillor Cindy Gilroy, Chair of the Citizen Equity Committee.

The event is being put on with dozens of different City departments, including the Winnipeg Police Service, Winnipeg Public Libraries, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and more.

The goal is to teach newcomers about some of the things they may not have experienced where they came from, including domesticated pets or a police force like Winnipeg's.

"It's important they understand that there are really good services available in the city," Gilroy said. "We want to make sure they are getting the services they need."

The public is welcome to come as well and engage with the newcomer community. A citizenship ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m., while the fair kicks off at 1:00 p.m.
