Dozens of performers from the popular Canadian TV show Hymn Sing are reuniting for one final concert in Winnipeg this Sunday.

John Nelson sang on the show from 1968 to 1974. He says it's an opportunity to respectfully bring the program to a close.

"When we walk onto the platform and we turn around and see a full sanctuary in Bethel Mennonite Church, I think at that point, before we even sing a note, I think the emotion will hit many of us," says Nelson.

Hymn Sing ran from 1965 to 1995, and was produced in Winnipeg.

Cynthia Dutton was on the program for 20 years, from 1975 to 1995. She says she's anxious to get together and see people she hasn't seen in a long time, as well as meet some of the choristers she doesn't know.

"It's just thrilling, the idea of seeing people that you haven't seen for 48 years. Is that even possible? It just seems impossible," says Lois Watson-Lyons, another Hymn Sing alumnus, who was on the show from 1970 to 1974.

Nelson says Hymn Sing left an indelible impression on his life and on the Canadian landscape.

There are about 21-22 musical numbers on tap for Sunday, according to Nelson. The show's been in the works for months (Nelson says he originally floated the idea around about a year ago), but Dutton says they have yet to rehearse as a full group. She says they'll have about three hours for that. Any singers who wanted the music ahead of time could have it mailed to them, or look online, according to Nelson.

"We're excited to see how it's all going to turn out, and we're finishing up last-minute details, doing things, so it'll be down to the wire to get everything done," says Carol Nowell, a Hymn Singer from 1965-1970. Nowell and Dutton have been working on the reunion show script and picking soloists, with input from Nelson as well.

The performance starts at 3 on Sunday at Bethel Mennonite Church on Stafford Street; it is a ticketed event. Richard Lyons, who is not a Hymn Singer but is in charge of publicity for the reunion show, says doors open at 2 and there will be an archival exhibition and a video playing before the show.
