Winnipeg's ice skating trail on the Red and Assiniboine rivers has broken another record.

Not only is the trail the longest its ever been, its now been open for more days in a season than ever before.

The Forks announced this morning that today marks day 69. The Red River Mutual Trail opened this season on December 22, 2017. The previous record of 68 was set in 2015, according to The Forks' data.

On February 9th, The Forks announced the trail was officially 10 kilometres in length, beating the old record of 9.34 set in 2009. Winnipeg set on official Guinness record in 2008 with an 8.34 kilometre trail, but the world title is now held by Lake Windermere Whiteway, in Invermere, BC at 29.98 kilometres, set in 2014.

The Forks' marketing and communications coordinator Larissa Peck says the trail will be up and running as long as it's safe.

"Ice thinkness is still between 23-36 inches (thick)," Peck says in an email. "But as we lose that top layer to the warming sun, and the (temperatures) remain warm overnight, we're unable to repair it. Fingers crossed for a few more days, but we're really starting to feel those springtime temperatures now."

Peck says their records show the latest the trail has ever been open is March 11th.
