The Winnipeg Police Service says the head of a North End cathedral's statue is back, and they're hoping its cross might be returned soon.

The head and staff of a statue of St. Volodymyr were stolen from the Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral at 115 McGregor Street.

Police say that a citizen located the head on May 25. The WPS says the person found the head abandoned in the 500 block of Dufferin Avenue and returned it to the church.

Investigators believe that the top and bottom of the staff may have also been discarded in the area and are requesting the public’s assistance with locating them.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Pope John Paul II blessed the statue in 1984. It was made by well-known Winnipeg sculptor Leo Mol.
