Yesterday, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) held an event recognizing it's location on Treaty 1 territory.

A new plaque now hangs in the Winnipeg office of MCC Canada after yesterday's event. The plaque honors the fact that the office is located on Treaty 1 territory, the traditional land of the Anishinaabe, Cree and Dakota people and the homeland of the Metis Nation.

"By acknowledging the territory that we are living on, we remind our self of the work we are doing and the presence that we have has an impact on the people with whom we share this territory," said MCC Manitoba's Indigenous Neighbours Program Coordinator, Kerry Saner-Harvey.

"We are grateful for their stewardship of this land and their hospitality which allows us to live, work and serve God the Creator here," the plaque reads.

MCC continues to say that as a Christian organization, they want to acknowledge the harms that have been committed and strive to work towards reconciliation "in our words and deeds."

The plaque hangs in the Plaza Street office, but Saner-Harvey says that it will be going up in all MCC Manitoba offices.
