Manitoba was hit by a mid-September heat wave, breaking record highs across the province.

It was hot in Manitoba yesterday and we have a low pressure system in the northern Prairies to thank.

"The circulation around that low allowed a southwesterly flow into Manitoba," said Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Natalie Hasell. "A bit of a ridge to our east allowed for sunny conditions [as well]."

Multiple records were set across Manitoba*, including:

  • Carman hit 36.0 (29.5 - 2006) and was the hot spot of Canada yesterday
  • Dauphin hit 30.8 (29.4 - 1968)
  • Fisher Branch hit 30.2 (28.0 - 1998)
  • Gimli hit 31.6 (28.5 - 1995)
  • Gretna hit 34.0 (28.9 - 1995)
  • Island Lake hit 23.7 (23.4 - 1998)
  • Pilot Mound hit 33.0 (31.1 - 1952)
  • Pinawa hit 31.4 (28.9 - 1966)
  • Portage La Prairie hit 33.4 (31.7 - 1908) and was the oldest record to be broken
  • Winnipeg hit 34.8 (33.3 - 1952)

Unfortunately, the heat won't last long. Projected highs are expected to dip well below 20ºC starting on Friday, with a weekend worth of rain in the forecast.
