A fully decorated artificial evergreen towering over city hall will be hard to miss this Christmas.

The City of Winnipeg is proudly displayed on their 50-foot tree on Main Street.

“With the lights, decoration, and larger size, it will certainly be very difficult to miss this Christmas tree," Derek Resch, the Public Service Operations Supervisor says in a statement.

The roughly three-story-tall tree weighs 9,965 lbs, holding its own against the large trees being decorated at this time of the year. It will have almost 50,000 glowing lights and is decorated with thousands of blue, gold, and white decorations.

More than 8,000 individual decorations were hung on the tree, piece by piece, by City of Winnipeg staff in October inside of a city warehouse. Once that was done they pieced the parts together and loaded them onto trailers.

“We started the tradition of installing the artificial tree in 2019 because crews were still cleaning up after the unprecedented October storm that year,” Resch says. “The tree has provided an environmentally friendly alternative to a live Christmas tree and it is still able to be enjoyed through the holiday season.”

Cranes were used last week to stack each piece together.

The tree's 50,000 lights will be lit at the end of November, lighting up the city until early next year.

“Even though we now have a total of 64,400 lights on the tree, power consumption will continue to be low because they are all LED.".

The tree has 640 branches in total and has almost doubled in size since the previous year's display. Last year's tree was 28 feet tall.
