As extreme temperatures hit Manitoba, meteorologists have issued heat warnings across the province.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a heat warning for most of Manitoba, including the City of Winnipeg. This comes after a special weather statement was issued earlier in the week, warning of above normal temperatures throughout the week and into the weekend.

Daytime high temperatures of 32 degrees or hotter are expected from Friday until Sunday, with elevated overnight temperatures. Along with the heat, the humidity will be moderate and winds will be light, providing little relief. John Paul Cragg with ECCC says we can expect humidex values well above 40C.

ECCC recommends rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours, taking frequent breaks in cooled buildings, and never leaving a person or pet inside a closed vehicle.

Temperatures are expected to peak at 36C on Saturday and 35C on Sunday, almost a full 10 degrees above normal early-August temperatures.

The warning stretches across most of Manitoba. Special air quality statements remain in effect across Manitoba due to smoke from British Columbia wildfires, which will degrade air quality even further.
