The president of the Manitoba Metis Federation is among the recipients of a Governor General’s Sovereign Medal for Volunteers.

David Chartrand was presented the medal by Lieutenant Governor Janice Filmon at Government House earlier this week.

He says it's very humbling to be given that kind of recognition. And he credits his mother for raising him to be the man he is today.

"My mom passed away about five years ago, but I'm a mama's boy. My mom always raised me to be respectful and hard working. So, I kind of reflected on here for a while when I got the award," said Chartrand.

Chartrand says his life would be different if not for the people who support him.

"When you look at the staff and all the people that make a difference right from the local level of our governance, you know, all of them participating and supporting my vision, believing in my vision and my recognition of where I want to go with my cabinet and my government. They stand with me through thick and thin. Without them this would not be happening, my life would be different or went somewhere else.

The Sovereign Medal is presented to individuals who contribute to the betterment of a community. President Chartrand was selected for his work in strengthening the Métis community in both rural and urban areas.

Chartrand was presented the medal by Lieutenant Governor Janice Filmon on behalf of Gov. Gen. Julie Payette earlier this week.
