The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) is asking anyone who may have seen a boat involved in a boating accident on the Red to contact them.

The WPS says that a boat loaded with three men was involved in an accident on the Red River Friday, May 4 shortly before midnight.

According to police, the boat capsized on the river near the Chief Peguis Trail Bridge.

When police arrived on the scene they learned that three of the males made it to shore, but one was still missing.

Police began a search of the river for the missing male and boat, with the help of Air1 and General Patrol Officers along with members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and their Water Rescue Team, from the Chief Peguis Trail Bridge to Lockport.

Neither the man or the boat were located.

Police say that the three other men were taken to the hospital; two in stable condition and one in unstable.

The 24-year-old driver of the boat has been arrested for Impaired Driving While Ability Impaired Causing Death, Driving While Ability Impaired, and Causing Death by Criminal Negligence. He was released on a Promise to Appear.

Investigators are seeking the assistance of anyone who may have had contact with these males in the area of the docks around The Forks earlier in the evening, or anyone who may have video footage of this boat on the water before the time of the accident.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Traffic Division. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

According to the WPS' 2017 "Dry Boating campaign," 70% of all boating fatalities are related to impaired boating.
