The Winnipeg Police Service says the teen who was attacked may require care for the rest of his life.

Police are releasing more information regarding an earlier attack on May 30 in the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue.

While waiting for food, a teen boy and 30-year-old man engaged in conversation in line. Police says video camera footage shows the 30-year-old suspect showing the teen a gun in the man's backpack.

The teen gathered his food, leaving the facility when he was then struck in the back of the head with a hammer. Police are saying that strike is causing life-altering injuries. 

"He has a number of injuries that will likely require care," Constable Jay Shaw says.

The 15-year-old is still in hospital and is expected to remain in the hospital for a long time.

Yesterday at 1:04 p.m. in the area of Austin Street North and Pritchard Avenue, police arrested a suspect. Police say he was carrying a knife and hatchet at the time of his arrest.

The suspect is being charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Possession of a Weapon (x3)
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order (x7)
