This weekend will be chock-full of festivities, as will most of the summer. This is why Joy Smith wants to make you aware of how and why you need to keep your kids safe from predators.

Joy Smith runs the Joy Smith Foundation which works to combat human trafficking in Canada. One common problem they found is that often more human trafficking happens before and during large public events and celebrations such as the Grey Cup or Calgary Stampede.

"We have all these wonderful events. What happens at these events is that predators, human traffickers, also take a look at them. And they target young girls to be trafficked across this country... and what they do is they befriend them, and they promise them the world, lure them into the sex trade, and that's how human trafficking happens. And so we have to be very aware of what happens around any large entertainment event in the country."

The organization recently completed and released nationwide a documentary called Human Trafficking: Canada's Secret Shame to bring to light the pervasive problem throughout the country.

"I think education is our greatest weapon. And I think every parent, every teacher, every pastor, every police officer, everybody, has to learn about human trafficking and how it works and then we have to work together to stop it. And I would say out there don't hesitate. If you have a bad gut feeling and you're seeing a situation that you don't know about, report it to the police... so get the documentary Human Trafficking: Canada's Secret Shame. It'll teach you a lot about how young people, how your children, could be lured."
