Environment Canada says a severe thunderstorm warning is over for the City of Winnipeg, however more severe weather may be on the way.

Western Manitoba was hit hard by the same system earlier Friday with hail falling near Melita and Brandon.

Natalie Hasell from Environment Canada says the current system is expected to last in the Winnipeg area until later this morning. She says heavy downpours will continue throughout the storm and hail is also possible.

'There's actually quite a severe weather risk this afternoon'

Brad Vrolijk from Environment Canada says very severe weather is likely for much of southern Manitoba in the afternoon once again.

"We'll get a bit of a break in the afternoon, but by mid-afternoon, we're expecting another round of thunderstorms to develop of western North Dakota into western Manitoba.

"That kind of looks like the real deal for the next little while. There's a lot of instability pushing up."

Vrolijk says it looks like those storms will develop this afternoon and evening in the west part of the province and then push east and arrive in the Winnipeg area through the night. "We're not really expecting the thunderstorms to exit the eastern side of the province until sometime closer to Saturday morning.

High winds and hail are the main threats right now with that system, but Vrolijk says heavy downpours are also very possible.

"The thunderstorms later today could really be capable of very very heavy rainfall as well. So, if you end up stuck under one of those thunderstorms for a while you could easily see a quick two inches of rain if not more."
