A portion of the Trans Canada Highway is closed after at least three vehicles were involved in a crash and a semi-truck hit the ditch.

Highway 1 east of Winnipeg is being closed by local police.

A witness says three vehicles have been involved in a crash on the stretch of the westbound road roughly 20 kilometres east of the city. They describe the roads as being treacherous with ice build-up creating skating rink-like conditions.

"Folks we really mean it when we say conditions suck. Paved surfaces are skating rinks," Springfield Police Service writes on Facebook. "

Manitoba 511 says Highway 207 to Road 60 east is closed due to a crash. Springfield Police have closed both directions of this section of the highway, up until Falcon Lake. "Don’t add to emergency services workload tonight by going somewhere you don’t need to be and not making it there."

"Due to rapidly worsening weather and road conditions, Highway 1 (TransCanada) East of Deacons Corner (PR 207) clear to Falcon Lake will be closed," they say on Facebook.

Further down the road from the three-vehicle crash, a witness says there is a semi-truck in the ditch three kilometres east of Deacons Corner, noting the difficult driving conditions.

Manitoba 511 says most highways surrounding Winnipeg are partly covered in ice.
