A private high school in Gretna is celebrating it's long and storied history of musicals this weekend.

On Saturday, April 8, Mennonite Collegiate Institute (MCI) in Gretna is celebrating 50 years of musicals. The evening features music from musicals in the past, with the actual people who were a part of those musicals.

"MCI is a school of the church that is committed to exposing our students to Jesus and to walk in His way," music teacher Rick Heppner-Mueller said. "A high school musical provides fertile soil to live this out. Musicals create profound community that supports people to take risks and be part of something bigger than themselves."

The school recently finished up Seussical the Musical last month. Other musicals in the past have included The Music Man (1978 & 2006), Anne of Green Gables (1994), Plain & Fancy (2000), and Guys and Dolls (2011), all of which will have original cast members present. The school also did Les Miserables in 2007, and won a 2015 Rainbow Stage Award for their production of Beauty and the Beast.

"Each musical takes the student on a journey to a different place or time that we get to interpret artistically and through a Mennonite Anabaptist perspective," said Heppner-Mueller. "This type of education is invaluable. It really ends up changing peoples lives."

Musicals at MCI triple the population of Gretna every year, with over 1500 people coming every March. The goal for this event is to raise $50,000 towards the school.
