Another five grass/brush fire incidents kept fire crews busy all day and added even more to a high yearly total.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews were at a number of fire incidents on Tuesday.

The five fires crews dealt with on Tuesday were quickly contained, with no injuries, evacuations, or damages reported.

The first fire broke out at 7:54 a.m. at Waverley Street and Taylor Avenue. Huddersfield Place saw a tree fire at 5:48 p.m., while another grass fire broke out at Laxdal Road and Grant Avenue less than an hour later.

In the evening, fire crews responded to fires at Balgona Road and Provencher Boulevard. Investigations for all five fires are in progress.

"Forecasted strong winds today increase the risk of wildland fires, as the wind can carry embers to different locations and create additional hotspots," said Deputy Chief Tom Wallace.

Those fires bring the total grass/brush fires WFPS has responded to since January 1 to 55. In 2017, WFPS responded to a total of 85.

An open-air fire ban is still in effect for all of Winnipeg and most of southern Manitoba. Call 911 if you spot a fire or if you see suspicious or irresponsible behaviour.
