A gas leak that began yesterday has been stopped.

Late Friday morning, a gas line was accidentally pierced at a construction site near the Kleefeld School forcing an evacuation of students, staff and residents living nearby. School for the affected students was closed as a result.

Hanover Fire Chief Paul Wiebe says the problem has been resolved.

“Our crews cleared the scene around 1:00 p.m., the gas flow has been stopped, and Manitoba Hydro crews remain on-site fixing whatever problems remain.”

Superintendent Randy Dueck commends the staff of Kleefeld School for responding quickly and efficiently.

“The staff did great. They understand evacuation because we practice drills. They got the kids out, they got the kids to the necessary muster points, they made sure all kids were accounted for, and they kept us posted.”

Dueck also thanks the parents and guardians who picked up their kids shortly after they were asked to do so. He says everyone is now at home safe.

As for the cause of the rupture? To Dueck’s knowledge, the line was cut during a fiber optics installation. The incident occurred while crew members were digging.

If there was ever any doubt, Dueck confirms that there will be school again on Monday.
