People working from home can still enjoy daily workouts according to one fitness expert.

Manitoba's state of emergency ordered all gyms to close for thirty days, resulting in locals not being able to follow their fitness routines. Instead of becoming sedative for thirty days, many Manitobans are seeking ways to stay fit at home.

Greg Thom, an instructor with Goodlife Fitness, is sharing how people can stay active while away from the gym.

"For me, it was just about telling myself I had to do it," Thom says about working out at home. "I am so used to working in a gym that has access to everything I need."

While most gym-goers are used to using machines, Thom says people can get a good workout using their own body weight.

"We have so much opportunity in our house to use (for working out)," Thom says.

His favourite place for an at-home workout is the living room.

"I like to make a nice wide open space in the living room and do some bodyweight stuff," he says. "The secret is leaving that tv off."

He adds that having the radio on helps him stay focussed. "I love putting on my favourite radio station, 95.1, and getting good music going and let that motivate you."

The goal, for Thom, is to "keep that heart rate going" by doing high repetition bodyweight activities. He adds that by picking three or four favourite moves and doing them in a row will help with cardio.

"You have to find something you enjoy doing," Thom says. "If you do not find it exciting you are not going to do it."

The instructor recommends getting outside when possible and take a walk or bike ride. Thom recommends getting into a schedule and spending half an hour each day focussed on physical activity.
