A firefighter is recovering in hospital following a house fire early Monday morning.

The blaze broke out at 3:35 a.m. today in a home in the 600 block of College Avenue.

When crews arrived, smoke and flames were pouring out of the home. Firefighters launched an offensive attack, but deteriorating conditions required them to switch to a defensive exterior attack while protecting neighbouring homes from fire exposure.

When safe to do so, crews switched tactics back to an offensive interior attack, declaring the fire under control at 5:36 a.m.

All occupants of the home were able to self evacuate before crews arrived on scene. One firefighter was injured and was transported to hospital in stable condition.

There is no word on a cause or damage estimate at this time.

Fire officials continue to investigate.
