The family of Justin Silicz is asking Winnipeg to help them find justice.

The 32-year-old lawyer's family is dealing with incredible loss after Silicz's murder on Sunday, June 2.

Michael Silicz, Justin's older brother, says, "My parents lost their son, I lost my baby bro, and my kids lost their uncle. Winnipeg lost a promising young lawyer. ... There is a hole in our hearts. We need closure. We want justice for our little JJ.

"Please, please, if you were in the area and saw something please come forward. ...Last, but not least, If you are one of those three guys who made a mistake, please come forward."

In a release, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) says, "Justin was in the company of two other adults at approximately 4:30 a.m. on June 2 when they became involved in an altercation with three males in the area of Arlington St. and McDermot Ave. The altercation escalated as the groups moved on to Winnipeg Ave. between Arlington Ave. and Tecumseh St. As a result of this altercation, Justin suffered serious injuries that caused his death.

Winnipeg police are currently working on this case and have released the descriptions of the three suspects. The first suspect is a black male, in his mid-20s, approximately 6’0” in height, slim build, and was wearing red coloured clothing at the time of the event. The other two suspects are also males, with darker complexions and were seen wearing dark coloured clothing. All three appeared to leave the area, heading east, on Winnipeg Avenue on foot.

The other two males with Silicz were not injured in the altercation but witnessed the murder of their friend.

Rob Carver, a Public Information Officer (PIO) for the WPS, says, "I cannot stress this enough, things that you may think are not important, can be critical in solving cases like this."

Carver also stressed that this was a completely random act: "I can tell you that a lot of times when I am up here, I am talking about people putting themselves in situations of jeopardy and it ends tragically. I can tell you that is not the case here. This is a horrible intersection of two groups that had nothing to do with each other and it resulted in a murder.

"Our victims here did not do anything that would have put them in a position of jeopardy. ...I don't see anything that would indicate that there is anything that anyone would have done differently. It did not start out as some beef between two parties."

When asked if crystal meth could have been a factor in the homicide, Carver explains there is no way of determining that without the suspects in custody.

Carver says, "I struggle when I have been a PIO, for a number of years. Part of my job is to make sure that, as a representative of Winnipeg Police Services - as a spokesperson - that I am able to deliver a message. Occasionally, I am stuck here in a situation like this where there simply is no message. This is a horrible, horrible event and there isn't a message. I don' think - I couldn't give anyone any advice to do anything different. This is a tragedy by any definition of that word and there isn't a message."

Investigators are asking both residents and businesses in the area to check any security systems for any possible video. As well, anyone having information about people or activity in the area during this time is asked to call in.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477) if they wish to remain anonymous.
