Unexpected construction has begun on the Red River Bridge along the south Perimeter Highway after an inspection raised concerns.

Manitoba Infrastructure says that deck cracking was discovered during the inspection in November. One westbound lane was closed then as a result.

Manitoba Infrastructure began work to repair the cracking on Sunday, December 16. As a result traffic is down to only one lane in each direction.

They will also be using pilot vehicles on December 21 and 22 to slow traffic while concrete is poured.

Work is expected to last until January 4.
