Most candidates in Winnipeg's municipal election actually have to wait for the election to find out if they've won.

But Janice Lukes already knows she'll be councillor for the new Waverley West ward, since no one decided to run against her.

Lukes says she never dreamed she'd be acclaimed.

"You know, I'm going to miss the rush and excitement of a campaign because it's really exciting, but then I'm not going to miss the rush and the excitement of a campaign because it's so much work."

Lukes is currently councillor for South Winnipeg-St. Norbert Ward, which is being split into Waverley West and St. Norbert-Seine River.

Lukes says a new community centre for the area, crime, and growth are three of her top issues from speaking with community members.

"In a growing, new community, there are issues related to growth, fast and rapid growth. We've got to deal with proper maintenace of the area; we are close to the university and we've got a rooming house issue in the area."

Lukes says land has been purchased and money has been set aside to built the new community centre at Kenaston Boulevard and Bison Road South. She says they're now planning roads, pipes, and drainage, and the next step is to secure more money. The community centre is a part of the South Winnipeg Recreation Campus, which will include two schools.
