The City of Winnipeg says its yard waste collection will begin earlier than expected this year.

Starting April 17, residents can leave their yard waste for pickup on their garbage collection day alternating weeks.

The city offers the service from spring through fall each year and has seen good success with the program. Items accepted for yard waste include grass clippings, leaves, plants, flowers, bush/shrub clippings, and small tree branches (no more than 10 cm or four inches in diameter). Fruit grown on trees in your own yard is also accepted.

You can also leave some items outside a container including tied bundles of branches. The City says that bundles must be less than 22 kgs (50 lbs), and branches must be less than one metre (39 inches) long and less than 10 cm (four inches) in diameter.

While large paper bags are popular and cheap, there are also other acceptable containers for your yard waste. Old cardboard boxes may be used, and those will be taken away with the waste. As well, plastic containers such as tubs, old blue boxes, etc. may be used, and will be emptied on collection.

The city does not accept garbage, including animal waste, as part of yard waste as it is used for composting.

Area "A" will begin collection on April 17, and area "B" begins on April 24.

If you have questions about yard waste collection you can contact 311.
