Three Christian movies are nominated for Oscars in today’s announcement.

The Two Popes, Corpus Christi, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood have all been noticed by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences in this year’s awards.

Leading the group in nominations is The Two Popes. Nominated for three awards, the Netflix original is a contender for two awards in the acting categories and for its writing. Jonathan Pryce was nominated for Lead Actor in his role as Pope Francis, and Anthony Hopkins for Supporting Actor as Pope Benedict XVI. It has also been nominated for Adaptive Screenplay in the Writing category.

The Two Popes focusses on the time between the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the inauguration of Pope Francis. The film follows the friendship between the two men and their discussions during their brief visit. Pope Francis, who was known as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio at the time, was called to the Vatican to see Pope Benedict XVI. Bergoglio was visiting to hand in his resignation, but Pope Benedict had other plans for their visit.

While A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is not explicitly was a Christian movie, it follows Presbyterian Minister, Fred Rogers. Reporter Lloyd Vogel is a skeptic of Mr. Rogers but the minister finds a way to connect with the writer as Vogel covers his show's success. Tom Hanks, who plays Fred Rogers, is nominated under the Supporting Actor category.

A lesser-known film that was nominated is the Polish film Corpus Christi. It tells a story of a man named Daniel who dreams of opening his own parish despite being banned from the seminary due to a criminal past. Corpus Christi was nominated for its Oscar as an International Feature Film.

Another film that has been nominated for an Oscar that is not outwardly Christian is Sister. The film follows a boy as he grieves the loss of his sister due to China's former one-child policy. It has been nominated under the Animated Short Film category.

The 92nd Oscar ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 9.
