A fire late Monday night claimed the life of one cat.

The fire broke out just before 10:30 p.m. in a three-story apartment building on Tylehurst Street.

When crews arrived, there was smoke pouring out of the building. Firefighters fought the fire from the inside and had it declared under control 25 minutes later.

The fire was contained to the suite where it started.

Paramedics assessed and transported one resident to hospital in stable condition. Firefighters found a cat deceased in the suite.

Winnipeg Transit sent a bus to the scene to provide shelter for evacuated residents. Once the building was ventilated, residents could return to their suites.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
