A Canadian pastor who has been holding worship gatherings in Myanmar in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic is now facing jail time as a result.

David Lah used to pastor a church in Toronto but now travels the world as an evangelist. The CBC reports that Lah has been in Myanmar since at least February, and preaching there.

Global Affairs Canada confirms to the news agency that "a Canadian citizen faces charges for allegedly organizing mass gatherings in Myanmar." Officials say that they are in contact with that person and offering consular services. The department wouldn't provide any further details, citing privacy laws.

Police in the city of Yangon filed a report for two separate gatherings, held on April 7 and April 13. Police allege that a crowd had gathered to listen to Lah preach despite restrictions in place in the country due to COVID-19.

CBC says that the report says Lah violated the country's disaster management law. Lah could face up to three years in prison if convicted.
