"There is a lot of shock and pain," Ferlin Abrahamson, chair of Steeprock Bay Bible Camp, said late Wednesday evening.

He confirmed that RCMP are searching for a "presumed drowning victim, a 17-year-old male from Split Lake, Manitoba."

The boy went missing Tuesday, July 25, 2017, in the water at the Bible camp north of Swan River, MB, while helping to supervise a swimming time for the 64 campers registered for camp this week.

Abrahamson said that staff at both Steeprock Bay Bible Camp and Mid-Way Bible Camp near Thompson, are grieving right now. The young man was "on loan" from the latter for the week.

Abrahamson said that "ten camp workers and our lifeguard were supervising the swimming area at that time, and everyone feels some sense of responsibility. It is our prayer that they will not be destroyed by this 'grief guilt.'

"We also continue to pray for his family as they process this loss and await the closure of finding the body . . . The response from camper parents and community members has been helpful and we believe that God’s grace is sufficient, but this is a hard pill to swallow. His biological family, his community, his Midway Bible Camp Family, and our camp at Steeprock appreciate your prayers very much."

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team will search the water this morning.
