A new system is being launched by the City to help drivers avoid delays from construction and trains during the Waverley Underpass construction.

Due to the construction and frequent train crossings at the Waverley Underpass Project, Winnipeg is installing a travel time information system to help drivers avoid delays.

The underpass is just south of the Waverley Street and Taylor Avenue intersection. Electronic signs will be placed on northbound Waverley just before McGillivray Boulevard so that drivers can decide whether to take an alternate route.

"This is precisely the type of innovative thinking we need to improve transportation efficiency," said Mayor Brian Bowman in a release. "As a city, we need to continue researching and looking for innovative ways to improve transportation across our city."

A network of sensors will detect the presence of trains and vehicular traffic. It will take this information and predict travel times for northbound Waverley traffic. With the senors, the board can predict train traffic in advance, allowing a more seamless commute.

According to Cam Ward, the Waverley Underpass project manager, Winnipeg is the first city to use this innovative system.

Drivers can take McGillivray eastbound to Pembina Highway, or westbound to Kenaston Boulevard. Drivers can also continue north to Wilkes Avenue before turning westbound towards Kenaston.

The system will remain for the duration of the project. Construction will require lane closures and traffic restrictions as they complete the work.
