The Winkler Police Service is investigating after a 5-year-old boy was fatally struck by a vehicle while tobogganing.

The incident happened Sunday afternoon at around 1 p.m. When emergency crews arrived, the child was lying unresponsive on the roadway, and people in the neighbourhood had started performing CPR on him.

The child was rushed to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

After investigating, police discovered that the child had been sliding down a snow hill and onto a street with a toboggan.

Winkler police say a man visiting friends in the bay backed out of a driveway and was unaware the child had slid out onto the street. As the driver was reversing, he turned his vehicle towards the bay exit. He came to a stop before moving forward and did not notice the child was in front of the vehicle's bumper. He proceeded to move forward, fatally injuring the young boy.

The driver stopped and remained at the scene.

Police continue to investigate, and no charges have been laid at this time.
