Two people are recovering in hospital after an altercation turned violent.

Shortly after 12 a.m. Sunday, officers were called to the 1000 block of  St. James Street for the report of a fight and stabbing incident.

At the scene, officers found a man suffering from a serious lower-body injury. He was transported to hospital in critical  condition and later upgraded to stable condition.

A second adult male was also injured; however, his injuries were not life-threatening.

Winnipeg police say that a group of people allegedly became involved in an altercation. It escalated and turned violent when someone pulled out an edged weapon.

The investigation continues by members of the Major Crimes Unit.
