A rally to send a message to the provincial government to save emergency services at Concordia Hospital has been postponed due to rain.

The rally was supposed to happen at 11:30 this morning on the steps of the hospital.

Chris Pullen is the vice-president of CUPE at Concordia Hospital and Concordia Place. He says he's worked at the hospital for 19 years, and lived in the area for 35 years.

"My brothers and sisters, and my kids now, have come here any time they need something. You need stitches you come here, I broke my arm I come here. Now I'm going to have to go across the city to get those same sorts of services," said Pullen today.

Concordia's ER is scheduled to close next summer. The emergency department at Seven Oaks is to be converted into urgent care in September 2019.

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority says it appreciates the transition has impacted the community near Concordia and has raised some concerns, but it says the shift in emergency services across the region will allow for better service delivery.

The province and the WRHA are in the midst of a major health care system overhaul in Winnipeg that goes beyond ER closures. Pullen is concerned about a lack of 24/7 health care services in the Concordia and surrounding regions.

The WRHA has yet to announce a future use for Concordia's ER space when it closes.

"Maybe (with) enough pressure they'll turn it into an urgent care, maybe they'll open it into a QuickCare with extended hours -- something that will give people in this community access to health care that they need," said Pullen.

The WRHA recommends anyone in an emergency, in any area of the city, call 911. The WRHA says the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is able to offer life-saving care from the moment they reach a patient, and they select the most appropriate health care facility regardless of where they are.
