Emma Durand‑Wood wins Elmwood‑East Kildonan byelection
Winnipeg city council has a new face in Elmwood-East Kildonan, as long-time community advocate Emma Durand-Wood won Saturday's byelection. Durand-Wood beat six other candidates in the race to replace the late councillor Jason Schreyer, who died earlier this year. She was the first to enter the race and campaigned on a platform built around equity, sustainability, and holistic community investment. The unofficial results show Durand-Wood finished with 1,567 votes, or 31.48 per cent of the vote. Abel Gutierrez was the runner-up with 887 votes. According to the unofficial numbers, voter turnout was 15.64 per cent. From grassroots to council chambers Durand-Wood is well known in the area for her local leadership. She helped re-establish the Glenelm Neighbourhood Association, served as vice-chair of the Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation, and co-founded multiple advocacy groups, including Safe Speeds Winnipeg and Trees Please Winnipeg. “Elmwood-East Kildonan is my home, and it’s the only place I’ve lived since moving to Winnipeg in 2008,” she wrote in her campaign bio. “I live with my husband and our three school-aged kids in the Glenelm neighbourhood.” Housing, safety and sustainability top of Durand-Wood's agenda Durand-Wood’s campaign emphasized practical responses to affordability, crime prevention, housing, and public safety. She championed a "Housing First" approach to chronic homelessness, investment in youth recreation, safer street design, and better food access across so-called "food desert" neighbourhoods. She also focused on sustainability, noting that investments in public transit, walkability, tree cover, and green infrastructure can reduce costs and increase resilience to climate change. School trustees also elected Peter Bjornson has been elected as the new school trustee for Louis Riel Ward 3, winning 54.2 per cent of the vote. She finished ahead of eight other candidates, with Janet Belluk and Sharon Esau coming in second and third, respectively.
