Fight to the finish: Niagara River Lions and Calgary Surge emerge victorious in CEBL Playoffs
It was a full house at the Canada Life Centre, 300 Portage Avenue, on Friday evening for the Canadian Elite Basketball League Playoffs. The Eastern Conference Final began at 5 p.m. with a tough battle between the Niagara River Lions and Scarborough Shooting Stars. The Scarborough Shooting Stars were dynamic and played consistently throughout the game, taking play opportunities during transitions. The Niagara River Lions had a strong rebound game and were efficient at the free-throw line, making all 21 of their free throws. A nail-biting game, both teams kept a tight point margin on each other the entire time; however, Khalil Ahmad left the audience on the edge of their seats with a game-winning three-pointer for the River Lions. The final score was 93-91 for the Niagara River Lions. "Khalil sees the game on the line and wants to end it," said Victor Raso, the Head Coach of the Niagara River Lions, about Ahmad's performance. Ahmad said, "We needed a three-pointer, and I took it, stepped into it with confidence and knocked it down." The Sea Bears had the home-court advantage and played to a backdrop of enthusiastic fans cheering them on. They started strong in the first half of the game with a buzzer-beater by Will Richardson at the end of the first quarter. They struggled with playing efficiency and keeping control of the ball in the second half but put up a good fight against the Calgary Surge towards the end of the game. The Surge, however, came out victorious with a 90- 79 final score. The Calgary Surge played a confident and consistent game with smooth three-pointers and fade-away shots. "I'm proud of the guys, they fought hard," said Mike Taylor, Head Coach of the Winnipeg Sea Bears, about Friday's game. The Calgary Surge and Niagara River Lions will face off in the CEBL Championship on Sunday at 6 p.m., in what is sure to be a fierce match-up.
