A man is recovering from an assault that occurred in broad daylight after he left his family to use the public restroom.

Early Sunday afternoon, a man in his 30s was at The Forks with his family. The Winnipeg Police Service says that he left his family to use a public restroom. Once he left the public restroom, police say he was confronted by two men, assaulting the man with a knife. Authorities say the attack was unprovoked.

He is in the hospital, in stable condition.

The men fled on foot, leaving many witnesses behind in the high-traffic area. Police were called at 12:36 p.m., with investigators quickly finding the suspects at a residential building in the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue.

A 20-year-old man is facing seven assault-related charges, and a 21-year-old is facing three assault-related charges. The 21-year-old was released on an undertaking and the 20-year-old remains in custody.
