Police say a Winnipeg woman is in custody after allegedly assaulting an elderly woman while attempting to steal her walker.

Before 5 p.m. on May 15, a woman in her 90s was standing at the corner of Portage Avenue and Vaughn Street with her walker. While she was standing there, a woman approached her, demanding her walker. The suspect tried to grab the walker, resulting in the elderly woman falling to the ground, getting hurt during her fall onto concrete and needing hospital care. The suspect then fled.

On Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service Auxillary Cadet Unit was in the 200 block of Portage Avenue conducting a foot patrol when they saw the suspect. Central District officers were called, taking the 42-year-old suspect into custody.

She is facing an Aggravated Assault charge.
