A 29-year-old woman from Winnipeg is facing charges related to animal cruelty after they were called to a home on Wellington Avenue early this week.

The Winnipeg Police Service says they were called to the home around 4 p.m. on Sept. 26 to a report of an injured animal. When officers arrived they found the woman with an eight-month-old kitten that was suffering from "severe bodily injuries."

The woman was arrested at the scene and officers took the kitten to a veterinary hospital.

While the kitten underwent emergency surgery, the veterinarian ultimately had to euthanize it due to the extent of its injuries.

The woman was charged with killing or injuring animals.

The WPS says that it encourages people to report suspected animal cruelty or neglect to the Provincial Animal Care Line at 204-945-8000.
