A man from Winnipeg is in custody after police say he carjacked a woman whose car he had offered to push out of a snowbank.

The Winnipeg Police Service says they were called just after 9 p.m. to the 300 block of Manitoba Avenue.

"A female in her 60s had gotten her vehicle stuck in a snowbank when a male suspect approached and offered to help her," the WPS says in a release.

But the man turned out to be anything but a good Samaritan. Police allege that after getting the vehicle out of the snow, the man carjacked the woman at knifepoint and then fled in the car.

Not even 20 minutes after receiving the call officers in a general patrol unit saw the vehicle parked in the 400 block of Alexander Ave. with the suspect inside. When the man entered a house officers, with the assistance of other units, took the man into custody.

A 20-year-old man from Winnipeg has been charged with robbery and remains in custody.
