A group of concerned residents in Wolseley are working together to create a safer environment for people living in their community.

After seeing an increase in drug use and drug paraphernalia, as well as petty crime and destructive behaviour in their neighbourhood, they decided to start a Wolseley Neighbourhood watch.

Aleksandra Osipova, part of the Wolseley Neighbourhood Watch says they are a very tight knit and accepting community located close to downtown, which makes it a good place to go without being bothered.

"We wanted to get on top of the situation that is happening before it becomes an even larger situation as we do have enough crisis happening in our city as a whole in all neighbourhoods," explained Osipova.

She says they go out in groups of anywhere from 8 to 20 people every Wednesday for two hours starting at 6:30 p.m..

"We're just connecting with the community, sort of staying on top of events that have gone on. It can be anything from bike theft or maybe bits of arson, or things like finding drug paraphernalia," said Osipova. "We just want to educate people on how to clear it or how to get in contact with people who know how to do it properly."

The group is receiving plenty of support and training from the 204 Neighbourhood Watch Group, which has been trained by the Bear Clan Patrol. They are also getting plenty of help from people that are already involved in different aspects of social and mental health within our city.

The Wolseley Neighbourhood Watch is currently working on getting charitable status in an effort to accept donations to attract more people to their team.

According to Osipova, the long term goal is to be able to patrol the streets seven days a week and have a larger rotation of neighbours connecting with the community.
