There were plenty of cheers at the St. Vital Curling Club Tuesday morning, as Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris defeated Switzerland in mixed doubles curling to win gold for Canada.

Around 80 people made their way to the St. Vital Curling Club before 5 a.m. today, to take in the historic game.

"At first I was a little concerned that we were going to have more camera crews here than fans, but people were even up bringing their little ones. We had young kids here before heading off to school. Their parents brought them. It is just amazing, the support and the community and the love that people have for Kaitlyn, and Canada and our club," said Pamela Kok, president of the St. Vital Curling Club.

Kok says the atmosphere during the game was intense.

"We were excited and we were stressed at the same time. It was very nerve wracking. We knew they could do it. It was quiet at times during crucial shots, and then all of a sudden amazing shots would happen and then the place lit up with excitement and loud cheers. It was just amazing to be a part of it. You really needed to be here at the club to experience it with all these people here, with all these fans," said Kok.

This win was an extra special one for the St. Vital Curling Club.

"It is amazing! This is like the second gold medal in two consecutive winter games, and we have now a two time, first ever female curler who has a gold medal," explained Kok.

Lawes and Morris defeated Switzerland 10-3 in the sixth end, to take home gold.

The duo had a rough start, losing their first round robin game of the tournament, but they quickly rebounded winning each match after that.

This is the first time that mixed doubles curling has been played at the winter games.
