A group called Winnipeg Trails has an online petition that people can sign in hopes of keeping the emergency walking and cycling network open.

The City of Winnipeg expanded this network for the public to walk and bike in response to COVID-19. On July 7 the city is planning on closing the temporary paths and resuming regular traffic.

The group wants to get 10,000 signatures and they have just over 8,000, at which time they will bring the petition to Public Works in downtown Winnipeg today, June 9.

During the summer months, with many guidelines still in place due to the pandemic, the group says “We need more healthy transportation options, not less. Now, more than ever.”

As summer approaches, the people of Winnipeg are looking for options of things to do, as choices are limited compared to last year.

City Councillor for St. Boniface, Matt Allard has been working on making road ways safer in Winnipeg for some time. He says, "As the father of an 11-year-old girl, I can tell you protected facilities are essential to get people to make the choice to use their bicycles and active transportation — to make the switch."
