A Winnipeg man is dead after falling into water near a remote cabin in northern Manitoba over the weekend.

RCMP Manitoba says in a release that officers received a report of a drowning just before 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sep. 11.

Officers from South Indian Lake went to the cabin along Provincial Road 493 in O-pipon-Na-piwin Cree Nation (South Indian Lake), Man.

When they arrived the officers located a male in a small pond near the cabin.

Police say a 46-year-old male from Winnipeg was quickly recovered by officers but was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Initial investigation has determined that the victim slipped in the mud on the banks of the pond and fell in the water.

The investigation is ongoing.

O-pipon-Na-piwin Cree Nation is approximately 750 km north of Winnipeg.
