After a serious sexual assault earlier this month, Winnipeg police have made an arrest thanks to the help of a business in the area.

While walking in the area of Sargent Avenue and Toronto Street, a woman was approached by a man she did not know on Sept. 6 around 8:00 a.m.

The man tried to speak with the woman before forcing her into a house in the area without warning. There, police say the man attempted to sexually assault the woman.

The woman was able to flee the house but the suspect caught up to her and pulled her into a breezeway next to a business. There the woman was "seriously sexually assaulted."

A passerby then caused the suspect to flee.

The woman was treated at a hospital and released.

With the assistance of a business in the area where the assault occurred, Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officers were able to identify a suspect.

A 27-year-old Winnipeg man was arrested on Sept. 16 on charges of aggravated sexual assault and overcoming resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate, or strangling another person.

The man has been detained in custody.
